Study Of Motion - "Ticker Tape"
Observations and Measurements

1. What is "Ticker Tape"?:  It is a narrow paper tape which can be passed through printing devices that place symbols ranging from simple dots to alpha-numeric symbols. In physics the tape is often used in what are generally called recording timers. These timers act as clocks or stop watches. They make individual "tic" marks on the paper tape at regular time intervals as the tape is pulled through the device. The "tic" marks are usually dots made by either an inked carbon paper or a mark made by an electrical spark leaving a mark on specially made tape. Regardless of the type of recording timer used, the marks are made at regular time intervals. These time intervals are usually small fractions of second, and can be determined by comparing the number of dots made on a strip of paper tape as it is pulled through the timer to the number of seconds ellapsed (recorded by a stop watch) while the paper is being pulled. Below are some examples of the patterns of "tic" marks observed most frequently during experiments. Note that the faster the tape is pulled, the larger is the distance between the "tic" marks. The terms "slower" and "faster" used here are relative comparisons and are not based on any exact measurements.

a. Constant Speed or Velocity Examples:
